Zantac is a well recognized brand in many households, and it has been sold for more than 30 years in the US.  It was one of the most prescribed drugs in the United States.  The FDA approved prescription Zantac for the short-term treatment of ulcers in 1983. An over the counter form of Zantac began being sold in 2004 to treat heartburn.  You might recognize the names:  75® Regular Strength and ZANTAC 150® Maximum Strength.  Zantac (ranitidine) belongs to a family of drugs known as histamine-2 or H2 blockers. Ranitidine and other H2 blockers work by decreasing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Zantac was one of the best selling drugs in US history.

Zantac stopped being sold after laboratory testing performed in 2019 found dangerous levels of NDMA in the medication.  CVS, Walgreens and Rite-Aid, and other stores both in the U.S. took the product off their selves as early as fall of 2019.  Sanofi S.A., the manufacturer of Zantac, then issued a recall which was followed by the FDA warning that confirmed that NDMA could build up over time if Zantac was consumed with any kind of frequency.  The official warning from the FDA, issued in April 2020, confirmed that the potential cancer-The FDA found that: “the impurity in some ranitidine products increases over time and when stored at higher than room temperatures and may result in consumer exposure to unacceptable levels of this impurity.”  The Zantac litigation is now underway, and at Zayed Law Offices we are on the first wave of firms that are investigating and prosecuting Zantac cases for people who have been diagnosed with gastrointestinal cancer after frequent Zantac usage.

There are a few very large corporations that have cracked the profitability code for dialysis treatment. These corporations are usually treating Medicare patients, and so they are incentivized to do as little work as possible to stay profitable. That being said, decades ago, dialysis was provided by a far greater breadth of facilities. This was a necessary medical service not a profit center. As a few publicly traded companies bought up clinics throughout the country, there were several consequences. First, there are usually very few options in any geographic area for dialysis treatment, and this is because these few companies have cornered the market. Second, because dialysis treatment is frequently paid for by Medicare, these large companies have their prices set by the federal government. Third, in order to ensure that their clinics are as profitable as possible, these dialysis companies do everything possible to cut the costs of providing dialysis. Fourth, the conduct of dialysis corporations flouts antitrust laws in the United States. As stated above, in any geographic location, there are now only one or two options for dialysis treatment, and this trend has developed because dialysis corporation take advantage of the minimum antitrust threshold rules. Because the large publicly traded dialysis companies are buying up small clinics on a piecemeal basis throughout the country, they have been able to create quasi monopolies without reporting their conduct for antitrust scrutiny.

Who is paying for the profits of publicly traded dialysis corporations?

These dialysis corporations can’t increase their net profits by increasing the cost of dialysis because they are paid by medicare.  So they increase their profits by cutting costs.  Costs are cut in dialysis clinics not just by increased efficiency.  Rather, they cut costs by understaffing, by increasing patient count, and by removing doctors from clinics.  There are no doctors in dialysis clinics on a day to day basis.  These clinics are primarily run by unskilled laborers and nurses.  This paradigm is a tinderbox for injuries to vulnerable dialysis patients.

FINDING OF NDMA IN ZANTAC

When the third party laboratory found NDMA in Zantac, there were grave implications.  NDMA is a known carcinogen, and exposure to high amounts of NDMA has been linked to several different types of cancer.  NDMA is listed as a potent human carcinogen by the World Health Organization, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, and the Environmental Protection Agency

People taking Zantac have been ingesting NDMA into their system on a daily basis. Even the lower levels of NDMA found in the FDA testing are alarming high.  It is probable that people who have regularly taken Zantac, both off the counter and by prescription have a meaningfully higher chance of developing certain types of cancer.  While any type of cancer can be caused by NDMA, gastrointestinal tract cancers and breast cancers are more closely linked.

THE ZANTAC MDL

We are in the early stages of the Zantac MDL.  Zayed Law Offices is investigating claims in Illinois and throughout the United States.  There is an urgency to prosecuting Zantac cases because currently information is being collected to assess the size and scope of all potential claims.  And in early 2020, MDL No. 2924 was formed so that all claimants will be able to pool resources to seek justice and investigate the claims in the aggregate.  Claimants have been ordered to complete two info sheets so that the Court can ascertain the number of potential cases and the grievousness of the injuries.  The time to get involved in the MDL is now.  For this reason, we kindly ask people who are interested in investigating whether they have a Zantac case to contact Zayed Law Offices immediately so that we can get started working on your behalf.  For your benefit, we have attached the information sheets to this web page.
