Your Rights in A Zantac Lawsuit

If you received a cancer diagnosis and were taking Zantac at any point, then you may have a right to join in the Zantac MDL and sue for damages to recover medical costs, costs for pain and suffering, loss of income, and more.
In early 2020, a Zantac cancer MDL, or MDL No. 2924, formed so that all claimants will pool resources to investigate claims and seek justice for their grievances. This type of case has benefits when many people suffer the same harm for the same reason, so they are common in pharmaceutical claims.
An MDL or multidistrict litigation process is similar to a class-action lawsuit but different in that a class-action case involves a single lawsuit filed by a large group of people who have suffered similar harm by the same defendant or group of defendants (e.g., a single company or corporate entity that may involve multiple individuals), while an MDL case involves multiple lawsuits filed by different parties.
Claimants in the Zantac lawsuits must complete two info sheets so that the court can ascertain the number of potential cases or plaintiffs and the grievousness of their injuries.
If you are interested in pursuing a Zantac cancer lawsuit or believe you have a Zantac cancer case, please contact the Zantac lawyers at Zayed Law Offices immediately so we can get started working on your behalf.
The time to get involved in the Zantac MDL is now.
Why Are Zantac Lawsuits Cancer Lawsuits Happening?
Zantac or ranitidine is a well-recognized and commonly used brand in the United States, and it was on shelves for over thirty years.
What's more, Zantac was one of the most prescribed drugs in the U.S., so you or someone you care about probably took Zantac at some point.
Zantac belongs to a family of drugs known as histamine-2 or H2 blockers, often called antacids, which decrease the amount of acid produced in the stomach.
Before its ban, Zantac was one of the best-selling drugs in U.S. history.
The FDA approved prescription Zantac for the short-term treatment of stomach ulcers in 1983, and in 2004, an over-the-counter form of Zantac gained approval as a treatment for heartburn.
You probably recognize the names—ZANTAC 75® Regular Strength and ZANTAC 150® Maximum Strength.
Recommended Zantac dosages ranged from 75 milligrams to 300 milligrams daily, although some patients may have taken higher amounts.
In 2019, third-party laboratory testing showed dangerous levels of NDMA, resulting in the stoppage of Zantac sales in the United States.
CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, and other drug stores took the product off the shelves as early as the fall of 2019.
Sanofi S.A., the manufacturer of the branded version of Zantac, issued a recall, and an FDA warning followed that Zantac contained NDMA and it could build up in your system if you consumed Zantac frequently.
This official FDA warning happened in April 2020 and confirmed that taking Zantac regularly or even sporadically can lead to a meaningfully higher chance of developing certain types of cancer.
In its warning, the FDA stated that “the impurity (NDMA) in some ranitidine products (e.g., Zantac) increases over time and when stored at higher than room temperatures.”
This may result in consumer exposure to unacceptable levels of this impurity.
Zantac Lawsuit Update 2022

The Zantac MDL cases consolidated in a class-action claim in federal court in the Southern District of Florida. The court aims to start the initial bellwether trials in 2023. Judge Robin L. Rosenberg is presiding over MDL no. 2924.
As of January, people filed 2,024 cases involving Zantac. There are thousands more accepted by the court (though not yet filed) to avoid any issues with the statute of limitations. Some cases might drop out of the MDL as the court will no longer hear cases involving kidney or breast cancer.
Many discovery deadlines passed in 2021, with plaintiff expert depositions regarding general causation due to April 25, 2022. Then, parties have until May 9, 2022, to file Daubert motions (which seek to exclude testimony from certain experts) and until June 27, 2022, to file oppositions to Daubert motions.
Once the court hears and rules on all
Daubert motions, it will begin selecting cases for early trials. You should be aware that a bellwether trial is a sample trial composed of a smaller subset of a larger group of plaintiffs that allows all parties involved to see what the future holds.
It indicates trends in litigation that can help plaintiffs and defendants determine how they want to proceed. Cases or plaintiffs not involved in the bellwether trial can still participate later and are eligible for settlements or damages.
Accordingly, if you file a Zantac claim in federal court, regardless of where you live, where the prescribing doctor practices, or where the harms occurred, your lawsuit will wind up in Florida. (You do not need to physically go to Florida to participate in this case—please
contact the Zantac attorneys at Zayed Law Offices if you are in Illinois and believe you have a cause to participate in this MDL).
When will the Zantac Lawsuit be Settled?
Based on the latest information, there is a proposed schedule and location for the Zantac MDL and if the case adheres to this schedule, there could be a settlement negotiation for Zantac victims in late 2022 or early 2023.
While this may seem too long for you or a family member who has waited for damages, things are moving along.
Zantac Lawsuit Settlement Amounts

A Zantac settlement could be worth a substantial amount of money in the future, so please follow our updates on this page and contact us as soon as possible if you believe that you or a loved one are eligible to participate in the lawsuit.
More than 10 manufacturers of the prescription versions of Zantac or ranitidine and more than 20 manufacturers of generic ranitidine or generic Zantac mean multiple defendants and related parties faced Zantac lawsuits. A judge dismissed the generic manufacturers from MDL no. 2924 in August 2021. Lawyers will likely appeal this ruling.
While this decision can hurt certain plaintiffs, if it holds up on appeal, the Zantac multidistrict litigation will considerably streamline. Plaintiffs' attorneys - including the team at Zayed Law Offices - can file an appeal while also taking more time to investigate and prepare the scientific background to the Zantac cancer cases against manufacturers Sanofi S.A., Glaxo, Boehringer Ingelheim, and Pfizer.
Regardless of the version or versions of Zantac or ranitidine you or the individual in question used that led to the development of gastrointestinal or other related cancers, you may still have a claim in the Zantac MDL or similar lawsuits.

NDMA And Zantac Lawsuits
Millions Took Zantac for Heartburn

Finding NDMA in Zantac has grave implications.
NDMA is a known human carcinogen and is on lists of potential human carcinogens by the World Health Organization, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, and the Environmental Protection Agency.
Research links exposure to high amounts of NDMA to several different types of cancer, and people who take prescription or over-the-counter Zantac have been ingesting this hazardous chemical into their systems on a daily or regular basis.
Even the lowest levels of NDMA found via the FDA testing are alarmingly high, so people who regularly took the over-the-counter or prescription versions of Zantac have a higher chance of developing certain cancers.
While researchers link many cancers to NDMA and different cancers can qualify you for the Zantac MDL, gastrointestinal tract cancers have the clearest link as of this writing.
Reasons for a Zantac Lawsuit and MDL
For decades, people who suffer from heartburn and acid reflux often have turned to Zantac for both occasional relief or long-term treatment for their digestive issues and stomach ailments.
Furthermore, many adults may have given their children this heartburn medication without realizing that it was recalled. They might not have heard the dire warnings about the product and its links to cancer and related problems.
Because taking Zantac with any kind of frequency can result in a build-up of NDMA in one's system, and NDMA is a known human carcinogen linked to gastrointestinal cancers and other cancers, cancer patients and their families recover damages from the drug's manufacturer, Sanofi S.A.
Since millions of people took Zantac, and the potential cases spread across multiple districts and state lines, an MDL, or multi-district litigation, streamlined the pretrial motions and discovery proceedings.
The efficiency and economy of an MDL allow all parties to save money and valuable time when it comes to getting results and recovering damages.
MDL or multidistrict litigation can also expedite the entire process of a lawsuit against the makers and distributors of Zantac.
MDL lawsuits can still take weeks or months to deliver a result but are often quicker than individual lawsuits.
Do I Have a Zantac Lawsuit Case?

If you wonder whether you or a loved one or family member can join the Zantac MDL or Zantac litigation, the requirements are fairly simple. The Zantac injury lawyers at Zayed Law Offices are currently working with clients who have developed cancer either while actively taking or after taking over-the-counter or prescription Zantac (or some combination of the two versions).

online contact form for a free no-obligation consultation.
Types of cancer linked to Zantac usage include but are not limited to:
- Bladder cancer
- Colorectal/intestinal
- Esophageal cancer
- Gastric cancer
- Liver cancer
- Lung cancer
- Pancreatic cancer
- Prostate cancer
If you developed other types of cancer and were a former Zantac user, please do not hesitate to contact the Zantac lawyers at Zayed Law Offices as well.
We will investigate your case and help you determine if you are eligible to participate in the Zantac MDL.
Our Zantac lawsuit team is actively assessing and signing Zantac cancer cases where Zantac was used regularly by the plaintiff for more than six months.
Note that the stronger the correlation between your usage of or consumption of Zantac and subsequent cancer, the stronger your case will be.
The first concern in these cases and investigations is whether you—the plaintiff in this scenario—regularly used Zantac.
The highest awards or highest monetary amounts recovered will likely be correlated with specific cancer variants that are the most closely linked to the gastrointestinal system.
The usage of prescription-strength Zantac, as opposed to over-the-counter Zantac, is also an important factor in proving the link between your cancer and the medication.
The length of time you or your loved one took Zantac may matter. People who used Zantac for six months or longer have a greater chance of proving a correlation between their cancer and taking Zantac.
Connected Illnesses and Long-Term Side Effects of “Zantac Cancer”
While cancer and the associated treatment and recovery is certainly traumatic, the long-term side effects of Zantac-related cancers can also have lifelong effects, including Crohn's disease (an inflammatory bowel and digestive tract disease that causes diarrhea, pain, weight loss, and cramping) and PPH (or primary pulmonary hypertension, which causes the blood vessels in the lungs to narrow, resulting in high blood pressure in the pulmonary artery).
The suffering and costs associated with these and other illnesses connected to Zantac cancers can add up in lawsuits for damages due to Zantac or ranitidine usage.
Other Long-Term Effects of Zantac Use
While cancer due to Zantac usage is the primary focus of the Zantac MDL or MDL no. 2924, other negative effects of prolonged exposure to NDMA and Zantac may qualify you for damages, including but not limited to:
- Liver failure
- Enlarged liver
- Reduced liver function
- Scarring of the liver
- Fibrosis of the liver
- Jaundice
- Hepatitis
- Reduced kidney function
- Reduced lung function
- Skin rashes
- Hair loss
- Vitamin B-12 deficiency
- Reduced platelet levels
- Cardiac arrhythmia or irregular heartbeat
- Tachycardia or rapid heartbeat
- Nervous system problems
- Elevated risk of pneumonia
- Fevers
- Nausea and vomiting
- Stomach cramps, constipation, or diarrhea
- Dizziness, drowsiness, or other sleep problems
- Headaches
- Tender breasts (in males)
- Decreased sex drive

Zantac Lawsuit Settlements and Jury Trials

While a Zantac lawsuit may settle out of court for a monetary amount agreed upon by both the defendant and plaintiff and their lawyers, a Zantac lawsuit case may go to trial absent a satisfactory settlement.
Zantac lawsuits go to trial for many reasons.
For instance, if the negligent party or parties are solely at fault but their insurance won't acknowledge the fault of the policyholder, the case may go to trial to enable a judge and jury to decide whether to award damages and in what amounts.
In the Zantac MDL, all the pretrial motions and discovery proceedings are consolidated into one court that covers all jurisdictions, so damages award will depend on the result of this MDL process.
What Do I Do During a Zantac Lawsuit?
During a Zantac lawsuit (or any other legal action or mediation), only communicate with your own legal team.
Refer all questions and concerns to your Zantac cancer lawyer.
