What Illinois Cities Have the Most Car Accidents?

The State of Illinois is home to approximately 12 million people, making it one of the ten largest in the country by population. It is understandable, then (but nonetheless unfortunate), that car accidents occur frequently throughout Illinois.

However, these crashes are not evenly distributed. Some cities in the “Prairie State” see a greater number of accidents than others, thus representing a greater danger to residents and visitors who use their roads. This blog discusses what Illinois cities have the most car accidents, and what you can do if you’ve been involved in one.

The 10 Illinois Cities With the Most Car Accidents

The following communities are notable for having some of the highest numbers of car accidents out of all Illinois cities and towns:

1. Chicago

As Illinois’ largest city, it should come as no surprise that the majority of the state’s car crashes in 2023 occurred in Chicago. That year alone saw 101,023 wrecks take place in the city, including 158 fatal accidents and 17,792 crashes resulting in some level of injury.

2. Aurora

A total of 4,360 car accidents took place in Aurora in 2023, a figure that equates to over ten per day. And though there were only ten fatal wrecks in the entire year, 1,053 crashes still caused harm to at least one person. The remaining recorded collisions caused damage to property or vehicular damage only.

3. Rockford

Rockford reported 3,775 traffic crashes in 2023. Seventeen victims were killed, and another 1,139 people suffered some degree of injury in the city’s 808 recorded injury accidents.

4. Joliet

The City of Joliet experienced 3,251 motor vehicle collisions during 2022. Nine of these killed at least one person, and nearly 1,127 others were hurt in the city’s 820 injury-causing crashes.

5. Springfield

The capital city of Illinois experienced 3,318 total crashes in 2023, a total that includes 16 fatalities and 791 injury wrecks that harmed 1,080 people.

6. Peoria

Over 2,700 traffic accidents took place on Peoria’s streets in 2023. Only five individuals’ lives were lost, but 806 injury accidents left another 1,171 people injured.

7. Naperville

Naperville recorded a total of 2,254 car accidents in 2023. While the majority of these resulted in property damage, three crashes killed three people, and approximately 675 people were wounded in 493 injury-related crashes.

8. Elgin

Though Elgin experienced slightly fewer traffic crashes in 2023 than Naperville—2,148—the city saw more fatal and injury-causing crashes. There were five individuals killed in fatal wrecks, and 873 people were hurt in 592 other accidents.

9. Waukegan

Waukegan is another city that saw a higher ratio of injury and fatal accidents compared to the overall number of collisions it experienced in 2023. There were a total of 1,991 accidents, including 12 fatal crashes and 533 injury accidents that led to 12 fatalities and 797 injured victims.

10. Champaign

Even as the last city on this list, the risk of injury and death from traffic crashes was nevertheless present in Champaign during 2023. The city reported 1,404 total vehicular accidents, including three fatality crashes and 380 injury accidents. Three people were killed and 543 were injured as a result.

Drivers in Illinois must always remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings. Negligent, drunk, and distracted driving, among many other reckless behaviors, can occur in any city or town. The threat of an injury or fatal accident is ever-present throughout the state, even if some areas see them occur more frequently than others.
