Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines deliver a steady stream of pressurized air through a hose linked to a mask. The mask covers the nose and mouth, preventing the airway from collapsing and ensuring uninterrupted breathing while the wearer sleeps.
As such, CPAP machines are effective in treating sleep-related breathing disorders such as sleep apnea and helping premature babies with underdeveloped lungs.
While CPAP machines can improve sleep and quality of life, recent recalls may concern those who rely on these devices. Millions of these machines have been recalled. Our skilled lawyer shares what you need to know to protect yourself.
Why Were CPAP Machines Recalled?
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Philips Respironics recalled certain CPAP machines, ventilators, and bi-level positive airway pressure (BiPAP) machines in June 2021 due to potential health risks that could result in serious injury.
The polyester-based polyurethane (PE-PUR) foam used in the devices to reduce sound and vibration can break down, causing the wearer to breathe or swallow the foam particles. Hot and humid conditions can help cause the PE-PUR foam to break down. Using ozone cleaners or other cleaning methods not recommended by the manufacturer can also worsen the issue.
Philips and the FDA entered into a consent decree on April 9, 2024, which includes terms to prioritize patient relief and ensure that Philips complies with relevant regulations.
Those with affected machines will receive a new or reworked/remediated device or a partial refund for certain devices. Philips is also restricted, for the most part, from producing and selling new CPAP machines at several of its facilities.

The recall affects over 15 million devices. According to the FDA, Philips recalled the following:

All serial numbers for the above models are affected by the recall.
How Can I Check If My CPAP Machine Was Recalled?
If your CPAP machine is any of the models listed above, it is affected by the recall. Philips also has a registration website where you can register your CPAP machine and see if it is affected by the recall. Registration for affected CPAP and BiPAP devices ends December 31, 2024.
To register, you will fill in your basic information, including name, phone number, and address. Use your current information, not the information you provided when you purchased the machine.
If your machine was not part of the recall, a message on your screen will appear saying that the device is not included. If it is, you will receive a confirmation number you should keep for your records. Information will also appear regarding the recall and next steps.
Should I Stop Using My CPAP Machine?
It can be dangerous for some people to stop using their CPAP machine. CPAP machines can help prevent some serious health conditions, such as heart disease and stroke.
Defective CPAP machines may cause injury that requires medical intervention. You should discuss the safest option for your particular situation with your medical provider.
How Can I Learn More About My Legal Options for a Defective CPAP Machine?
If you have a recalled CPAP machine and have suffered an injury due to the machine, an experienced product liability lawyer can help. An attorney can explain your legal options, including potentially joining a class action lawsuit against Philips, during a free consultation.
